Sarah Smuts Kennedy-Joy Field - Soul Breathing 2, 2023

Joy Field - Soul Breathing #2 is part of an ongoing series that began in 2016 which seeks to amplify the vibration of joy in the atmospheric ocean we all inhabit. After a decade of making work in response to the ecological issues we face, I returned to the studio and asked what is the most useful thing to do next?  Now I lean into the field of energy and accept myself as part of the environment and not separate from it, and make work from this place. Closing my eyes, I imagine myself as an octopus; astounding creatures who blend with their environment in milliseconds, despite their inability to see colour.  Asking my pendulum to choose colour, I surrender. Via a process of letting go, my body and soul connect with all that is and I breath out the patterns and rhythms that I sense via a practice of deep listening. In doing so, I materialise works which aim to heal. The ocean is the unifying feature of the blue planet we are blessed to live on.  Through a process of healing, portals to other sensory organs can be opened, helping to bring balance back to the atmospheric ocean that we share with all things.
